I've worked with Garage Cultural for many years — from the beginning with the founder Mr. Ismael Duran, to designing NOIS with Amelia through Motor City Match, a community coffee shop she earned the grants for and fought hard for, until the building's ownership fell through and it never opened. That is exactly why a permanent home at 4670 Junction matters. Three generations in — now with Gabriel Duran, the founder's grandson, carrying the music forward — they are still showing up for this neighborhood. I live here, I build here — el arquitecto del pueblo — and Garage Cultural is a jewel of Southwest Detroit.

Garage Cultural is truly a gem in Michigan. I’m not aware of any other small nonprofit art organizations with such a visible impact on their community. I worked on a mural project with Amelia and it was fun, professional and has had a lasting impact on my community. It’s still a project I’m very proud of. Garage Cultural is a huge asset to all!

I think Detroit Metal Shaping would be a great neighbor with little to no pollution or neighborhood disturbance. I hope you approve his request and continue to adopt zoning that will benefit the neighborhood and the people who live in it with minimal pollution and minimal disturbance from manufacturing.

I am a long-term resident of the area, and our property sits directly behind this location, sharing the alley. Unfortunately, the current business has not been a good neighbor. There have been repeated issues with loud music, excessive vulgar language, and what appears to be alcohol-fueled activity, based on the numerous alcohol containers discarded onto our property.

In contrast, the proposed business would be a substantial improvement over the current operation. As you know, the area has experienced significant growth in recent years, including new housing, restaurants, specialty shops, a bookstore, and a bakery. The proposed business would be far more consistent with the positive direction and continued revitalization of the neighborhood.

During my internship with Garage Cultural in the summer of 2025 through Umichs Arts Initiative, showed me how vital a center like this is to the community. The center keeps native cultures alive through sharing and togetherness. I look forward to see the impact Garage will have as the new center developes and grows .

There is simply no place in Detroit like Garage Cultural. It’s a beloved intergenerational space where anyone will immediately feel at home—a place that hums with the rhythm of community. Their steady approach to community building has woven a connective space where music from Latín folk to hip-hop, visual art, and social justice organizing brings us together in creativity and love. Garage Cultural is deeply rooted in an international community of musicians, artists, and organizers. These relationships mean that Detroiters are able to learn from and collaborate with people that otherwise wouldn’t have Detroit on their itinerary if not for Garage Cultural. We are always better off because of their persistence and passion. They have created and continue to create a beautiful model for how to build a community where everyone belongs, one steeped in our shared stories, music, and joy.

Garage is a gem of a space. The amount of community engagement is incredible and uplifting. It is a safe place for young people in the community to be and hang out when they have no where else to go.
